Softball to take on ULM
Team riding four game win streakMarch 25, 2011 · Athletic Communications
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee softball team will continue its 2011 conference season this weekend in Monroe, La., as they take on the Warhawks on ULM beginning Saturday at 3 p.m. Sunday's finale will start at 1 p.m.
The Blue Raiders enter the important weekend series, riding the high of a four-game winning streak. The team has been batting well over the stretch, combining for a .293 team average and a .485 slugging percentage. More importantly, the hits have been clutch knocks as the team has a .394 average with runners in scoring position. Also, 12 of the team's 19 RBIs over the past four games have come with two outs.
The pitching staff has done their part to help the recent success. Combining for a staff ERA of 2.50 and an opponent average of .224, Blue Raider pitchers have been holding the opposition in check. The Blue Raiders have not given up a home run over the four-game streak. MT is 6-5 on the season, when they keep opposition in the park.
However, it is not the time for the team to rest on their ongoing winning streak with a scrappy ULM squad hungry for a series win. The Warhawks are 16-13 on the season, including a 3-3 mark in Sun Belt play.
With five ULM starters batting over three-hundred on the year, the series looks to a hard-fought affair.
The Warkawks have been excellent defending their home turf in 2011, going 8-3 on the season. The Blue Raiders only series win at the ULM Softball Complex came in 2007 with MT taking 2-1. MT is 2-4 at Monroe and trails in the all-time regular season conference series 5-7.
ULM took the 2010 season series 1-3, winning two of three in Murfreesboro and one in Mobile, Ala., when the Hawks eliminated the Blue Raiders from the Sun Belt post-season tournament.
"We are anticipating three close, gritty games," head coach Sue Nevar said. "I think both teams match up very well. For us to win, we must continue to get consistent pitching and timely hits. It should be a very exciting series."
