March 24, 2011 · MT Athletic Communications
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Freshman Ben Davis stepped up when his team needed him winning his singles match and handing Middle Tennessee a 4-3 win over Austin Peay on Thursday afternoon.

With the score tied at three, Davis was in his third set against Sean Bailey. Davis lost the first set 6-2 but rebounded to win the second by a score of 6-0. Davis took a 6-4 win in the third set to record his 12th singles win of the season and improve the Blue Raiders to 7-8 on the season.

At 7-8 Middle Tennessee now has the same number of wins it did a year ago at the end of the season. The Blue Raiders' win is even more impressive in the fact that they lost the doubles point and had to win four singles matches to take the win. It is the second time this season Middle Tennessee has lost the doubles point and still notched a win at the end of the match.

Middle Tennessee lost the doubles point as the Governors won at positions 2 and 3 which were very tight matches. Dimiri Pippos trailed 7-5 for part of their match with John Storie and Joao Pagan. The pair was not able to pull ahead as APSU took the win 8-6.

Then at No. 2 doubles Elliot Barnwell and Matthew Langley were tied at 8 with Jasmin Ademovic and Remi Calleja. The match went to a tiebreaker with APSU pulling out the 9-8 win and taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

Ben Davis and Shaun Waters rounded out doubles action with their 8-6 win over Henrique Norbiato and Sean Bailey at No. 1.

Middle Tennessee responded quickly as Pippos defeated Storie 6-0, 6-1 to even the score at 1.

Waters fell 6-4, 6-3 to Norbiato giving APSU the lead but then Wishing won his match 7-5, 6-4 over Calleja to knot the match back at 2.

Barnwell gave Middle Tennessee its first lead at 3-2 with his three-set performance against Pagan. Barnwell lost the first set 6-3 but rallied winning the next two easily, 6-4, 6-1 to take the win.

At No. 2 singles, Langley fell 6-3, 6-4 to Ademovic setting up a dramatic finish as Davis was still on the court.

The Blue Raiders will be back in action on Sunday, March 27 when they travel to Atlanta to face Georgia State. The match is set for 10 a.m. CDT. Results will be posted on goblueraiders.com when they become available.
