May 6, 2006 · MT Media Relations
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee softball (19-39-1, 6-8 SBC) fell to No. 15 Louisiana-Lafayette (44-10, 11-4 SBC) 5-2, 10-0 Saturday at Blue Raider Field.

The Blue Raider pitchers just couldn't contain the offensive fire power of the Ragin Cajuns. However, the two runs Middle Tennessee scored in the first game snapped a five-game shutout streak ULL had over the Blue Raiders dating back to 2004.

In game one, Louisiana-Lafayette struck first with a run in the second inning. Tara Hamilton's RBI single put the Ragin Cajuns on the board first. Louisiana-Lafayette added three runs in the third inning.

Junior Melissa Weiland hit her seventh homerun of the season when she hit a solo shot over the left center field wall to lead off the fourth inning. It was Weiland's 16th homerun of her career and she is one long ball off tying for second place in the Blue Raider record books.

The Ragin Cajuns tacked on one run in the fifth.

In the sixth inning, Martha Davis led off with a single. Davis stole her third base of the season to put herself in scoring position. A single by Katie Mielke plated Davis for the second run of the game.

Laura Moore took the loss, falling to 9-16 on the season. Moore went 2.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits. Trish White came into the game and closed out the game going 4.2 innings allowing one run on two hits.

The second game was all Louisiana-Lafayette. The Blue Raiders were run ruled by the Ragin Cajuns and the game only went five inning as ULL posted 10 runs on Middle Tennessee.

Weiland and White were the only Blue Raiders to pick up hits in the game as ULL senior Ashley Kirchberg tossed a two-hit shutout.

Middle Tennessee freshman pitcher Samantha Floyd took the loss in the game, her first loss in the Sun Belt. Overall, Floyd drops to 2-4 on the season.

The Blue Raiders close out the regular season on Sunday by hosting Louisiana-Lafayette on at noon at Blue Raider Field. It will also be senior day.
