Softball to take on conference's best

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee softball team is set to travel to Lafayette, La., this weekend to take on Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns in an important conference-series. Sunday's series finale between the two teams will be broadcasted live at 11 a.m., on Comcast Sport South or Murfreesboro channel 26.
With the Sun Belt post-season tournament less than a month away, all the teams are doing everything they can to position themselves for the highest seed in the double-elimination playoff. The bottom four teams in the league all stand within three games of each other.
"We play in a very even league," head coach Sue Nevar said. "There are always one or two teams each season that take a strong lead and everyone else is within a game or two of one another scraping it out until the end."
Middle Tennessee, currently sitting seventh in the SBC, will face their biggest challenge of the season this weekend in the perennial Sun Belt powerhouse, Ragin' Cajuns. Louisiana currently sits atop the SBC standings with a 10-2 record. UL's two loses on the year have come at the hands of North Texas and FIU.
Historically, the Cajuns have dominated the series, holding a 36-3 advantage, including taking three of four from Middle Tennessee in 2011. Last season did see MT defeating UL for the first time ever in Murfreesboro. In 2007, the Blue Raiders took two of three from Louisiana in Lafayette.
"They are the class of our league," Nevar said. "It is going to take a total team effort. If we do not pitch well, defend strong and get clutch hits, they will have beat us."
Coverage of the Blue Raiders will be available on GoBlueRaiders.com and Twitter.com/MT_Softball.
