Summer Camps in Full Swing

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee will host baseball, tennis, soccer, basketball, softball and speed camps for children on the MTSU campus between now and the end of the month.

The Steve Peterson Baseball Day Camp for ages 7-12 begins Monday, June 19 and runs through Thursday, June 22. Cost is $195 per camper, with the sessions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at Reese Smith Field. Campers are on the field each day from 9-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. Cost includes instruction, t-shirt, insurance, awards, and lunch daily. Registration is from 8-9 a.m. on June 19. The Middle Tennessee tennis teams have two more weeks of individual camp, June 19-23 and 26-30 at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center. Director of Tennis Dale Short along with women's coach Alison Ojeda and several current men's players serve as instructors for the sessions, which run from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. each day. Camp is open to boys and girls ages 7-18, with groups for beginners and advanced players. Cost includes instruction, t-shirt, awards, lunch daily, and swimming and other activities at the Campus Recreation Center. Soccer coach Aston Rhoden will host a boys only camp, June 19-23, at the Middle Tennessee practice field. Expert technical and tactical instruction will be provided by the camp's outstanding coaching staff and top collegiate players. This camp is a week of fully demonstrated and intense training designed to help every field player and goalkeeper achieve new levels of expertise and understanding. Softball coach Leigh Podlesny will hold summer camp June 22-24 for ages 8-18 at Blue Raider Field. Camp for ages 8-12 will run from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each day, and ages 13-18 will take part in camp from 1:30-5 p.m. each afternoon. Cost is $100 per camper and includes hitting and defensive fundamentals, position play and base running and sliding. Men's basketball coach Kermit Davis will host an individual camp from June 26-29 at Murphy Center for grades K-12. Cost is $160 per camper. Each player will learn the fundamentals of the game along with specialized instruction in shooting, defense, ball handling and rebounding. Each camper will take the skills that he or she has learned and apply them in fun, competitive areas such as one-on-one games, bump competition, hot shot and free throw contests. Speed camp continues throughout the summer with Assistant AD for Strength and Conditioning Matt Riley as well as Assistant Strength Coach Cedric Walthaw. The once-a-week sessions include instruction on The First Step, Posture, Get-Away Step, Mechanics, Stance, Drills and Start and Stride Frequency. The first four-week session began last week and continues 14, 21 and 28, while the second four-week term meets July 12, 19, 26 and August 2. Finally, women's basketball coach Rick Insell will host an Elite Camp for grades 7-12 at Murphy Center June 29-July 2. Cost is $225 per camper and includes advanced basketball skill work and player development, daily lectures on the emphasis of offensive and defensive concepts, weight training, as well as a lecture on NCAA requirements.
