White Downs Blue, 56-44October 30, 2001 · MT Media Relations
"I was really pleased with the way we played tonight," head coach Stephany Smith said. "It's no secret how optimistic I have been since the summer about this team and they did not disappoint tonight. We have a lot of newcomers who were impressive, but our corp group of veterans is what makes having eight newcomers tolerable. We had a few who were coming off some bad practices, but when the lights came on tonight they really stepped up."
Holmes, out of Bishopville, SC, paced all scorers with 19 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field. Senior Joanne Aluka added 13 points and nine rebounds, while senior Jessica McClure pitched in 12 points and four assists. Sophomore Jennifer Justice was the only other White team player in double figures with 11.
The White team shot a sizzling 53 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free throw line.
"Jessica (McClure) and Joanne (Aluka) looked very good tonight," Smith added. "Jessica is our most improved player from a year ago and Joanne looks like she did as a freshman."
The Blue team, led by all-america candidate Jamie Thomatis, managed just 34 percent shooting and were out-rebounded by a 31-25 margin. Thomatis finished with a team-high 13 points and four steals.
The Lady Raiders will open their exhibition season on Nov. 6 at 6 PM against Life College.
