Four starters return on offensive line

Unit is deepest in Stockstill era

July 30, 2011 · Athletic Communications

Key Losses: RT Mark Fisher
Key Returnees: LT Mike Williams, LG Brandon McLeroy, C Alex Stuart, C Colin Boss, RG Preston Bailey

Battle to Watch: The center and right tackle positions appear to be the closest race when camp opens in August. At center, both Alex Stuart and Colin Boss were injured in the spring and Jesse Grisham came out as the starter. Jadareius Hamlin earned the starting nod at right tackle but Stephens has a number of options with possibly Preston Bailey, Stuart, Isaiah Anderson, Judd Hunt or Jason Rexroad trying to make a move.

Spring Standout: Mike Williams was the only starter at every spring practice and was clearly the best player. However, Isaiah Anderson was the groups most improved so keep an eye on this up-and-coming star from nearby Franklin, Tenn.

Coach Stephens on the offensive line
"If we can stay healthy, I think this group will be the deepest offensive line that I have had here at Middle Tennessee. We lost some experience with the graduation of Mark Fisher, but it is a very athletic and versatile group. We were without three starters in the spring but the young guys received a lot of quality reps which will only strengthen our depth. This is a smart, tough bunch of guys who I am very excited about in 2011.

Left Tackle
MIKE WILLIAMS (r-Senior) - Team leader with 36 career starts ... Is the most athletic lineman and has a good punch ... Very explosive and smart ... Size is his only drawback.

JORDAN JOHNSON (r-Sophomore) - An athletic lineman with good height, excellent feet, and long arms ... Has a chance to be a really good player in the future ... Just needs to add weight.

Left Guard
(Senior) - A three-year starter who has played in 37 games ... Is very aggressive and one of the leaders on offense ... Equally adept at run and pass blocking ... Rates as one of the team's top players.

ISAIAH ANDERSON (r-Freshman) - A hard working, conscientious, and aggressive player ... Most improved lineman during the spring ... Very versatile ... Once he gains weight and strength he has a chance to shine.

ALEX STUART (r-Junior) - Redshirted last year with a knee injury and played sparingly in the spring ... A very explosive player who has a lot of pop ... Plays with good leverage, has great feet, and is smart ... Just needs to stay healthy.

COLIN BOSS (r-Senior) - Has played in 34 career games and was the starter last year at center ... Is coming off hip surgery ... Very consistent last year ... A mentally tough player who never quits on a play ... Needs to improve quickness and conditioning ... Can play guard or center.

JESSE GRISHAM (r-Sophomore) - Played seven games last year ... Solid player with bright future ... Young player who needs to develop more strength and aggressiveness.

Right Guard
(r-Junior) - Started 12 games last year and is penciled in to start in 2011 ... Good at pass protection but needs to improve run blocking ... Played all last year on an injured knee which hampered his leg drive.

JOSH WALKER (r-Sophomore) - Has great size and aggressiveness ... Needs to develop flexibility and play with lower pad leverage.

JASON REXROAD (Freshman) - A strong, hard working player with a bright future ... Needs to gain more knowledge of the offense.

Right Tackle
(r-Sophomore) - A very athletic player who got valuable game experience last year ... Needs to keep improving knowledge of offense.

JUDD HUNT (r-Freshman) - An athletic player who is still learning ... Must develop better strength and understanding of the offense.
