Blue Raiders return lots of experience on special teams
Alan Gendreau chasing field goal and points recordAugust 5, 2011 · Athletic Communications
Key Losses: None
Key Returner: PK Alan Gendreau is a Lou Groza Award candidate and a two-time first team all-conference selection.
Battle to Watch: The battles to stay tuned to on special teams will be in the return game. Eric Russell is back as the punt returner but he will get serious push from veteran Tyler Mason and redshirt speedster Reggie Whatley. Kick returner will be another competitive battle between Benny Cunningham, Malcolm Beyah, Eric Russell, and Reggie Whatley.
Spring Standout: Alan Gendreau was very consistent all spring. The coaches stretched him on a number of kicks to see how far he could go in the spring and he responded well. Expect another strong season from the conference's top kicker.
Coach Stockstill on the special teams
"We did not do a lot of kicking in the spring but I feel good about our kicking game with two all-conference guys in (Alan) Gendreau and (Josh) Davis. Our long snapper and holder are back and I think we have a lot of athletic guys to choose from for our coverage teams. The return game could be special with some very dynamic guys in the lineup."
ALAN GENDREAU (Senior) - A very consistent kicker who is a two-time first team all-conference player ... Has made some big kicks for MT the past three years and coaches expect another stellar season from the senior.
ZACHARY LOPEZ (r-Freshman) - A walk-on who has not kicked in a game ... Needs to continue improving his consistency.
JOSH DAVIS (r-Sophomore) - A second team all-conference pick as a freshman ... Is very consistent and does an excellent job of placing punts inside the 10 and 20-yard lines ... Coaches expect another strong season from Davis.
NATHANIEL TOULSON (r-Senior) - Has a very powerful leg and gets his kicks off fast ... Needs work on his consistency.
ZEKE ANDERSON (r-Sophomore) - Was solid in his first year last season ... Has a great work ethic and snaps are consistent ... Needs to improve blocking.
JOSH DAVIS (r-Sophomore) - Was the team's holder all last year and was very consistent ... Works well with Alan Gendreau.
JEFF MURPHY (r-Junior) - A sure-handed player who adds another dimension for the Blue Raiders.
