First practice set for Monday

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Head Coach Rick Stockstill welcomed 105 veterans and newcomers Sunday as the team officially reported for the start of fall drills. The first official practice is set for Monday at 4:25 PM and is open to the public.

"We have had a great offseason and everyone is excited to get things started," said Stockstill. "We are a close team and possess good leadership on both sides of the ball. I believe this team is coming into camp with a chip on its shoulders and feeling like they have something to prove. I love their attitude."

The freshmen and transfers spent most of the day in academic orientation meetings Sunday before taking photos and physicals early in the afternoon. Following dinner, Stockstill will hold a senior meeting, followed by a team meeting, before calling it a day.

The NCAA's mandatory acclimatization period will begin with Monday's practice and will conclude with Friday's drills.

A total of 50 lettermen and 10 starters highlighted the list of players reporting to camp Sunday. Defensive lineman Paramore Tapa did not report because he did not fulfill his academic requirements.

Wide Receivers Jamar Brown and Arthur Williams, along with offensive linemen Preston Bailey and Mike Williams, and defensive tackle Patrick McNeil will not begin practice due to injuries. Brown is still recovering from knee surgery and A. Williams is still not back from his ACL injury in January. Bailey hopes to be back practicing in two weeks as he is still recovering from offseason surgeries and M. Williams should return to drills two weeks before the opener following knee surgery.

McNeil is lost for the season after rupturing his achilles and offensive lineman Colin Boss will be limited in early drills as he recovers from offseason surgery.

As for running back Drayton Calhoun who transferred from LSU, Stockstill is still waiting on the final word from the NCAA regarding his eligibility for 2011. Stockstill said the team will head to camp as if Calhoun will not play this fall.

In other news, Chuck Cantor is taking over as the offensive graduate assistant after Nick Coleman took a job on the Faulkner State staff and former Blue Raider Dwight Smith will serve as a student assistant. Smith will work with the defensive linemen.

The Blue Raiders will open the 2011 season at Big Ten foe Purdue, September 3. Kickoff is slated for 11:00 AM CST and the game will be shown nationally on the Big Ten Network.
