MIAMI, Fla. - Florida International scored two first-half goals and controlled play in much of the second half to take a 3-1 victory over Middle Tennessee in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Wednesday morning on the FIU campus.

The homestanding Panthers began the match in an attacking mode and had corner kicks in the opening minute and again in the fifth minute of the match. But the Blue Raiders settled down after the first 10 minutes and the match became back-and-forth.

FIU's Janessa Taddei suffered a busted nose in the 13th minute of the match, colliding with a Middle Tennessee player in the midfield. Taddei did not return to the match.

The Panthers got on the board first in the 26th minute when Erika Jaderblom laced a direct kick from about 45 yards out, sailing into the back of the net and passed a crowd of players in front of Blue Raider goalie Emily Shrum.

But the Blue Raiders knotted the score at one in the 27th minute when Lindsey Bopp sent a corner kick into the box and Lisa Langrish headed the ball into the net for her ninth goal of the year. MT had a chance to go ahead when Emily Carter headed a Laura Miguez cross in the 34th minute, but Carter's shot sailed high.

The Panthers took the lead in the 35th minute on a 30-yard shot from Carmen Lopez on an assist by Charissa Gingerich.

The second half began with Carter suffering a blow to the head after a scramble in front of the net on a corner kick. The sophomore from Evansville, Ind., came out of the game a few minutes later and did not return.

FIU (11-4-1) controlled much of the second half and scored the final tally in the 57th minute when Ifeoma Dieke centered a ball to Sasja Odenyo and Odenyo put it in for a 3-1 advantage.

The Blue Raiders (10-9) best scoring chance of the second half came on another Langrish header, this one in the 84th minute, but the ball sailed just wide.

The Panthers outshot MT, 14-8, in the match, including 9-4 in the second half. Shrum made three saves for Middle Tennessee in the defeat, and Panther goalie Amy Staley had four saves.

The Blue Raiders lost 3-1 for the second year in a row in the first round of the conference tournament, dropping a 3-1 decision to Denver last season in Mobile, Ala.
