Blue Raiders open fall season

ROCKY FACE, Ga. – Middle Tennessee opened the 2011 fall season Friday by competing in the 23rd annual Carpet Capital Classic at The Farm Club (par 72, 7,012 yards). The Blue Raiders opened with a 9-over par 297 total to stand 10th overall in a bunched field.

Host Georgia Tech fired a 2-under par 286 to grab the overall lead by one stroke over Chattanooga and Clemson. Georgia was in fourth with a 289 while Auburn rounded out the top five with a 290 total.

“We were okay today,” said Head Coach Whit Turnbow. “I saw some good things out there but we just did not finish well. Unfortunately, our schedule will not allow for mediocre play. We have to compete at a different level on this stage, and I think this team has it in them.”

Senior Hunter Green enjoyed one of the best rounds of the day with a 2-under par 70. Green, who had four birdies on the afternoon, is tied for fourth overall.

Sophomore Brett Patterson, coming off a very busy summer, shot a 74 after playing the back-nine at 1-under par. Patterson is tied for 27th.

Transfer Lucas Armstrong, playing in his first tournament as a Blue Raider, turned in a 76 and is tied for 40th, while sophomore Jordan Jennings is tied for 47th after registering a 77.

Douglas Harris, also playing his first tournament as a collegian, shot an 83 and is 60th overall.

The Blue Raiders will play the second round on Saturday. TEAM SCORES
