MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women’s tennis newcomers Flavia Nagayama and Nayara Moraes each ended Sunday with unblemished records to lead the Blue Raiders at their own tournament, the MT Shootout, at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center.
“Overall, I am pleased with the whole team’s performance this weekend,” said first-year head coach Shelley Godwin. “Our new two girls really stepped it up and got some great results today.
“We have a long way to go yet this fall but it was exciting for everyone to get on the courts and compete. We had great weather and fan support, as well, which does not go unnoticed.”
Nagayama was the lone Middle Tennessee player competing in a bracket final to win. She knocked off Lipscomb’s Deahna Welcher 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to capture the Lightning Singles flight.
Moraes made her Blue Raider debut Sunday and also won her lone singles match, handing Memphis’ Andrea Arques-Garcia a 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 setback in the third-place meeting of the Lightning Singles bracket.
The pair started the day by forming a doubles tandem in the second round-robin group. They picked up two victories in the morning, starting with an 8-6 decision against Western Kentucky’s Alex Crofford and McKinley Mason.
The newcomer duo then closed the doubles with another 8-6 triumph, recording the victory versus Lipscomb’s Jenny Borck and Welcher.
Seniors Carla Nava, Marietta Bigus and Taylor Coffey all competed in the finals of their respective brackets, only to lose in straight sets to their opponents. Junior Yuiri Nomoto also lost in the third-place match of the Blue Singles flight.
Three other Middle Tennessee double pairings posted 1-1 records on the day in their respective round-robin group.
The Blue Raiders will return to action when they compete in the UL Invitational October 7-9 in Lafayette, La.
