Freshman Nayara Moraes continued her impressive start to her collegiate career by setting herself up for a flight championship as well, playing in the A2 singles bracket. She will battle South Alabama’s Mariya Krachok after earning a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Louisiana’s Erin Wilbert Saturday.
Two other Blue Raiders will compete in consolation finals of their flights, including junior Yuiri Nomoto in A2 singles. Nomoto handed Louisiana’s Milou Israel a 6-2, 6-4 setback Saturday and will face another Ragin’ Cajun, Sandra Ahlquist, in the other side of the bracket Sunday.
Senior Marietta Bigus will match up against Southern Miss’ Alex Bradley in Sunday’s B1 singles flight consolation final after advancing past Northwestern State’s Dana Sardak by a 6-2, 6-4 score.
In doubles action, the Blue Raider tandem of Moraes and Nava will also be in championship competition Sunday after winning 8-3 over McNeese State’s Lara Pujol and Tea Tvrtkovic before taking a hard-fought, 9-8 (1) decision over Louisiana’s Israel and Wilbert Saturday. The MT pair will meet ULM’s Blankvoort and Monica Winkel in the A1 doubles title match.
The other Middle Tennessee duo in the same flight, Brand and Nagayama, dropped their first contest of the day before bouncing back to claim an 8-6 triumph over Pujol and Tvrtkovic.
In A2 doubles, Bigus and Dachos also lost their first match but responded with an 8-4 victory against ULM’s Vivian Polak and Isabelle Rocher.
Nomoto continued to be paired with South Alabama’s Veronika Kalugina. The mixed team was victorious in its first match, an 8-6 decision against Louisiana Tech’s Alena Erofeyeva and Laura Fernandez before it dropped its next match against a tandem from Southern Miss.
