“We are looking forward to the great opportunities that this weekend’s tournament will present to our team,” head coach Shelley Godwin said. “We will look to build off the momentum gained last weekend to continue to finish strong this fall.”
The Blue Raiders will be one of 17 schools from across the southeast competing at this weekend’s event, hosted by Alabama, and played at two different venues across 18 courts. Five Southeastern Conference schools, along with one from the Atlantic Coast Conference, help headline the participants.
Middle Tennessee has played well in its initial two fall tournaments under first-year head coach Godwin. The Blue Raiders have combined for a 27-12 singles record and 16-7 doubles mark, while opening at the MT Shootout and the Ragin’ Cajuns Women’s Tennis Classic.
Freshman Nayara Moraes tops the squad with a 5-0 singles record, including a 4-0 ledger at last weekend’s tournament in Lafayette, La., on her way to winning the A2 flight. Seniors Taylor Coffey and Alex Dachos, along with junior Lexi Brand, have all lost just once in singles play thus far.
Moraes and fellow newcomer, sophomore Flavia Nagayama, pace the doubles results with a 2-0 ledger with both wins coming at the home tournament in September. Nagayama also owns a 1-0 mark after pairing with junior Yuiri Nomoto.
The two-day event in Tuscaloosa is slated to begin at 9 a.m. both days. Friday’s action will include one round of doubles and two in singles, while Saturday will feature the final two rounds of doubles and the last round of singles play.
