Women's tennis set for dual match campaign in January

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women’s tennis will play six home matches among 21 total regular-season contests during the spring 2012 campaign it was announced Wednesday by head coach Shelley Godwin.

“We have a tough schedule ahead of us that will provide the team with many great opportunities to move this program forward,” Godwin said. “We will have to adopt the ‘road warrior’ mentality and use this to help us in conference and postseason play.”

The Blue Raiders start the season with seven matches away from Murfreesboro before opening the home slate Feb. 23 against Chattanooga. Middle Tennessee starts the season by traveling to Birmingham, Ala., for consecutive-day tilts at Samford (Jan. 27) and UAB (Jan. 28).

Road trips to Mobile, Ala., New Orleans and Memphis are also on the docket before the home opener.

A four-match homestand is featured during March, as the Blue Raiders welcome Murray State (March 10), Northern Iowa (March 13), Austin Peay (March 20) and Western Kentucky (March 25) to town.

After an end-of-month road swing to Arkansas, Middle Tennessee comes back for the home finale April 3 against Lipscomb.

The regular-season concludes with trips to Monroe, La., and Troy, Ala., before the Sun Belt Championships, April 19-22, in Denton, Texas.

Based on available records, the match against Northern Iowa will be the first between the two schools.

The Blue Raiders enter the spring after a strong performance in the fall, in which they registered a combined 62-23 (72.9 percent) singles record and 33-13 (71.7 percent) doubles mark.

All eight members of the team posted winning singles ledgers, led by nine victories apiece from senior Alex Dachos, junior Yuiri Nomoto and sophomore Flavia Nagayama.

Freshman Nayara Moraes and senior Carla Nava collected the most doubles wins of any pairing, tallying seven during the four fall tournaments.

Spring practice will begin in January as Middle Tennessee enters the first dual-match campaign under Godwin’s watch.
