Blue Raiders shave nine strokes off first round score

February 27, 2012 · Athletic Communications
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The trio of Ashley Haggard, Karisa Akin and Allie Knight each improved their opening round scores, and the Middle Tennessee women's golf team shot a 16-over 304 on Monday at Oak Point Golf Club to remain in 10th (out of 33) at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate.

"We had absolutely perfect conditions today compared to yesterday, but we just left a lot of strokes out there," head coach Chris Adams said. "This was the first time a few of our players have seen this course, and with no practice round, that kind of hurt us a bit. We know we dug ourselves a bit of a hole yesterday, so we're going into tomorrow to try to cut into the leads of the teams in front of us."

Haggard led the way for Middle Tennessee, posting a Blue Raider tournament-best three birdies en route to finishing the day with a two-over 74. The junior is now tied for 29th in the 179-player field at eight-over.

"Ashley really played well today," Adams said. "She hurt her wrist a little bit, but she was on it for the majority of the day and made some good saves."

Karisa Akin is also tied for 29th after running up 13 pars and a birdie on the way to a three-over 75.

Allie Knight cut five strokes off her showing on Sunday to card a four-over 76 and move up 18 spots into a tie for 75th at 13-over.

"Allie really hung tough," Adams said. "She came back from some pretty tough shots, but she's fun to watch. She never lets her emotions get the better of her and she's very steady."

Olivia Love shot a seven-over 79 and is also tied for 75th.

Steph Gough is in 171st place at 30-over and Natalie Chrisopulos, who is competing in the event as an individual, is tied for 101st at 15-over.

Middle Tennessee will play in the third and final round at Cougar Point Golf Course. Golfstat.com will provide live scoring.
