Blue Raiders face UNI for first time in program historyMarch 12, 2012 · Athletic Communications
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women’s tennis looks to extend its current win streak to three Tuesday when it plays host to Northern Iowa at 2 p.m. at the on-campus Buck Bouldin Tennis Center.
“We are looking forward to tomorrow’s match with UNI,” head coach Shelley Godwin said. “This will be a good out-of-conference match helping us get ready for the second half of the season. They are a solid team and we will have to come ready to fight on every court.”
The Blue Raiders have won their last two matches, a 4-3 decision at Florida Atlantic March 3 and a 7-0 sweep over Murray State at home Saturday. With the two victories, Middle Tennessee improved to 7-4 this spring and matched the overall win total from a year ago with nine regular-season matches remaining.
Saturday’s triumph over the Racers was the 20th straight in the series and saw the Blue Raiders not drop a set, as they opened by sweeping the doubles point and then handily taking care of business in singles action.
Junior Lexi Brand and freshman Nayara Moraes continue to pace the squad with seven singles triumphs apiece. Moraes joins seniors Marietta Bigus, junior Yuiri Nomoto and sophomore Flavia Nagayama as MT players with two-straight singles victories.
Nagayama and senior Alex Dachos picked up their second-consecutive doubles win Saturday, helping Middle Tennessee claim the point for the fifth time this season. It was only the second match in which the Blue Raiders swept all three doubles matches, equaling the effort Jan. 28 at UAB in a 5-2 victory.
Northern Iowa is off to a 10-4 start after picking up four-straight wins under the direction of head coach Sachin Kirtane. The Panthers, who compete in the Missouri Valley Conference, knocked off Milwaukee and Green Bay for heading to Murfreesboro earlier in the week to defeat UT-Martin and Murray State in neutral site action on MT’s courts.
Tuesday’s match will be the first in the series between Middle Tennessee and UNI. Live stats will be available on GoBlueRaiders.com.
