Akin named Sun Belt Golfer of the Month

Senior just the fourth Blue Raider to earn the award

NEW ORLEANS - Karisa Akin joined an exclusive club on Tuesday as the senior took home her first career Sun Belt Golfer of the Month award, the fifth such time that a Blue Raider has been honored in school history.

"Obviously, it's a testament to how well Karisa's played," head coach Chris Adams said. "She always seems to come on strong towards the end of the season, and winning that tournament last week is just another example of her rising to the occasion when you need her the most."

"It's always good to win an award like this, but I think as a group, we're a pretty strong team," Akin added. "This will help me keep my confidence up over these last two tournaments, but the goal is to extend our season further."

Akin is the first golfer to earn Golfer of the Month since both Morgan Hale and Clara Leathers last earned the recognition in the spring of 2010. Prior to that, Taryn Durham walked away with the award twice in the 2004-05 school year.

After a strong showing at Pinehurst two weeks ago, Akin put together a career event at the UALR Women's Classic last week. The Elizabethtown, Ky., native tied a career best with a one-under score of 215, just one stroke off of a school record. Akin was the low medalist in the event after recording two under-par rounds.
