Fourth career award for junior

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Middle Tennessee high jumper Ann Dudley was named Sun Belt Female Field Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.

The accolade comes following Dudley’s performance at the prestigious Penn Relays this past weekend in which she won the women’s collegiate high jump competition. The junior successfully cleared the bar at a height of 6 feet, 0.5 inches (1.84 meters) to finish ahead of a quartet of jumpers who recorded marks of 5-10.75 (1.80m).

Dudley’s jump is a new personal-best and also set a new outdoor school record for the event, breaking the previous measurement of 5-10.50 (5.79m) set by Veronica Tipton in 1992. In addition, the leap met the Provisional “B” Qualifying Standard for the U.S. Olympic Trials, possibly giving her the opportunity to attend the Trials.

Today’s honor completes a week of awards for Dudley as she was named Blue Raider Female Athlete of the Year at this past Thursday’s Raiders’ Choice Awards. It is her first league accolade of the outdoor season and fourth of her career. The Jacksonville, Fla., native was tabbed Sun Belt Field Athlete of the Week twice during the indoor season after her efforts at the MTSU Invitational and Kentucky Invitational. Last season, Dudley was recognized after her successful showing at the Ed Temple Classic.

“This is a well-deserved recognition for Ann,” said Middle Tennessee head coach Dean Hayes. “I cannot express how proud I am of her. She works extremely hard every day and her success is a byproduct of that.”

The Blue Raider track and field teams will be away from the track this weekend prior to heading to Lafayette, La., for the 2012 Sun Belt Outdoor Championships which take place May 11-13.
