Distance runners pace track & field at SBC Championships

David, Kapkiai, Davis lead MT

LAFAYETTE, La. -- Middle Tennessee senior Justus David captured a runner-up finish in the men’s 10,000-meter run while freshman Lucy Kapkiai came in third in the women’s race Friday night at the Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

David crossed the finish line in 30 minutes, 15.04 seconds to record the second-place result. Keith Davis also claimed a pivotal top-eight result for Middle Tennessee as he came in eighth, clocking a personal-best time of 32:47.18.

In the women’s competition, Kapkiai logged a time of 36:33.63 for her third-place finish. The result set a new Middle Tennessee school record in the event, besting the time that Kapkiai recorded earlier this season at the Rhodes Invitational.

The 2012 Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championships will continue Saturday at 9 a.m. CT with the continuation of the decathlon and heptathlon events. The Blue Raiders will begin the day with the women’s long jump at 12:30 p.m.
