Relays highlight final day of NCAA Regional

Blue Raider women advance to NCAA Championships

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Middle Tennessee women’s 4x100-meter relay team advanced to the NCAA Championship meet as they placed eighth overall in Saturday’s preliminaries at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Regional.

Rosina Amenebede, Christal Wilson, Nyeisha Wright and Kiara Henry joined together to place second in the first heat of the competition with a time of 44.89 seconds. The result was good enough to advance the quartet to next month’s Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Blue Raider men’s 4x400-meter relay team was unable to follow up on the women’s success, however. Rycine Ellison, Noah Akwu, Steven Palmer and Roscoe Payne clocked a time of 3:10.21, placing eighth in the second heat of the race.

In individual sprints events, Henry finished sixth in in the first heat of the women’s 200 meters in 23.68 seconds. Akwu placed 14th overall in the men’s 200 meters, finishing fifth in the second heat while recording a time of 20.71 seconds. Amenebede meanwhile crossed the finish line in 13.60 seconds while placing ninth in heat No. 1 of the quarterfinals of the women’s 100-meter hurdles. Unfortunately none of the three were able to advance in their individual events.

The women’s triple jump saw France Makabu finish 34th while posting a jump of 40 feet, 2.25 inches (12.25 meters). She was followed by Wright who capped her jumping career with a leap measuring 39-7.75 (12.08m) which put her 39th overall.

The women’s 4x100-meter relay team will join Ann Dudley in the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships which take place June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
