JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - A pair of first-half goals lifted the Middle Tennessee soccer team to a 2-0 win over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in the season-opener on Friday night at JSU Soccer Field. Senior Paige Goeglein and freshman Amalie Anderdal each tallied a goal in the victory.
"It was a good first win and a good way to start the season," head coach Aston Rhoden said. "Having played this team to double overtime last year, it was good to come to their field and get on the board early, then maintain that lead. It was a solid all-around effort, and hopefully this win gives us a boost going into Sunday's game."
The Blue Raiders (1-0) dominated action, placing 10 of their 13 shots on frame while holding JSU (0-1) to seven shots with three on goal. MT also collected eight corner kicks without allowing one for the Gamecocks.
Goeglein gave the Blue Raiders an early 1-0 advantage with a goal in the 10th minute. Tori Hawkins took a corner and sent the ball into play where Geoglein's first strike buried it into the back of the net.
"It was a very opportunistic goal, and she finished it well," Rhoden said.
Just four minutes later, the freshman duo of Anderdal and Emily Jorgenson combined for the second goal of the contest. Anderdal took the pass from Jorgenson fired off a shot from 30 yards out for the 2-0 lead.
Freshman Kelsey Brouwer earned the shutout in her first collegiate start. Brouwer made three stops as the Blue Raiders' back line controlled the Gamecocks' offensive attack to preserve the shutout.
"Kelsey did a fantastic job in goal for us," Rhoden said. "To be a freshman with a whole new back line, she played very well."
MT returns for its home opener on Sunday, hosting Ole Miss at the Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. Live stats, video and audio are available for all home matches this season. For more detailed updates, follow @MT_Soccer on Twitter.
