Blue Raiders win four matches on opening day of Dale Short Shootout

Zito and Legzdins win doubles match and singles matches

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee men's tennis team opened its fall season on Friday with four players playing in the Dale Short Shootout at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center. Two players, Ben Davis and Christoph Lang, opened play at the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.

The Blue Raiders in the Dale Short Shootout got off to a good start on Friday afternoon, winning a pair of doubles matches against Lipscomb. The team of sophomores Yannick Born and Marlon Brand broke serve twice in the first five games to take a 5-1 lead, defeating the team of Oliver Strecker and Miguel Cortez 8-3. Ettore Zito and Tomas Legzdins also got out to a 5-1 advantage in their doubles match against David Salazar and Colby Shaw. However, the duo from Lipscomb came back to get the match to 7-6 before Zito and Legzdins put them away 8-6.

Zito and Legzdins also won their respective singles matches on Friday. Legzdins won his first set against Lipscomb's Tanner Brown 6-2 but dropped the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6. The freshman bounced back and defeated Brown in the third set 6-2. Zito won in straight sets over Strecker 6-4, 6-1 and won the last six games of the second set. Born and Brand both dropped their singles matches in straight sets.

Davis and Lang started their day at Virginia in doubles action, falling to the tandem of Alexis Huegas and Michael Voscek of VCU 8-3. They then beat Bryan Welnetz and Tomas Hanzlik of Penn State 8-5 in the consolation bracket of the Red Doubles draw. In singles play, Lang lost a close match to Thomas Weigel of North Carolina State 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in the Gold Singles draw. Davis lost in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 2-6 to Alejandro Argente of VCU in the Orange Singles draw.

Middle Tennessee is back in action in the Dale Short Shootout Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with matches against Southern Illinois. Davis and Lang will have two singles matches and another doubles match at Virginia Saturday as well.
