MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Despite a slow start in doubles play, the Middle Tennessee men's tennis team won all four of its singles matches against Southern Illinois Saturday morning at the Dale Short Shootout at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center.
The morning did not start out well for Middle Tennessee as the Blue Raiders dropped both of their doubles matches to the Salukis. The duo of Ettore Zito and Tomas Legzdins lost to Badr Cherradi and Jonny Rigby of Southern Illinois 8-4. Yannick Born and Marlon Brand jumped out to a 4-1 advantage against SIU's Brandon Florez and Martijn Admiraal. The Salukis came back to even the match at 6-6, then broke serve twice to take an 8-7 lead. Florez and Admiraal then held serve for the 9-7 win.
The Blue Raiders shook off the two doubles defeats in singles play. Zito defeated Cherradi in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Brand also won in straight sets against Rafael Cuadrillero 6-3, 6-4. Legzdins earned a key break of serve late in the first set of his match against Rigby and won 7-5. He then swept the second set 6-0. Born dropped the first set of his match against Florez 3-6. The sophomore regrouped and won the second set 7-5 to force a deciding third set. The two players held serve up to 5-5 in the third when Born earned a key service break to take a 6-5 lead. Born then held serve to win the set 7-5 and the match.
"We got off to a slow start this morning in doubles, but we definitely picked up the intensity in the singles matches," recapped head coach Jimmy Borendame following play Saturday morning.
Junior Ben Davis and sophomore Christopher Lang also had a successful day at the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational hosted by Virginia Saturday. The duo won the consolation bracket of their doubles draw by defeating Lucas Oliveira and Amerigo Contini of Virginia Tech 9-8, taking the tiebreaker 7-1. Davis won his first singles match of the day in the consolation bracket of the Orange Singles draw 6-4, 6-4 over Austin Siegel of Louisville. He then defeated Rafael Paez of NC State 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to reach the consolation final of his singles draw. Lang lost his first singles match in the Gold Singles draw Saturday in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 1-6 to Adam Lee of Wake Forest. He bounced back to defeat Stuart DePaolo of North Carolina 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Blue Raiders wrap up the Dale Short Shootout on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center with matches against UAB. Davis and Lang will each play one singles match tomorrow at the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational.
