Women's Tennis completes day two of Hokie Invite
Constantinide plays in finals of 'D' flight singles on Sunday
September 29, 2012 · @MTAthleticsBLACKSBURG, Va. - Freshman Irina Constantinide advanced to the finals of the 'D' flight singles on day two of the Hokie Fall Invitational at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
The Romania native defeated UNC Wilmington's Miller Hales (6-1, 6-1) and UMBC's Josefin Stange-Jonsson (6-0, 6-1) to advance to the 'D' flight finals on Sunday. Constantinide faces ETSU's Sofia Espana tomorrow in a 10:30am Central match.
In other singles action, Nayara Moraes dropped a tough decision to Wofford's Audrey Coventry (6-7, 6-4, 1-0). However, Morayes bounced back in the third round with a defeat of ETSU's Larn McShane, 6-2, 6-0. On Sunday, Morayes faces Annisha Domenech from Liberty.
In the top 'A' flight doubles, Yuiri Nomoto lost a pair of matches on Saturday. Aleskandra Filipovski won 7-5, 6-2 over Nomoto, while Liberty's Alexandra Sheeran captures a 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 victory. Nomoto takes on host Virginia Tech's Isel Martinez-Marcos for seventh place on Sunday.
In the 'B' bracket, Flavia Nagayama dropped two singles contests to Virginia Tech's Raluca Mita (6-3, 6-0) and Armstrong Atlantic's Olga Kaloditsa (6-2, 6-0). Christina Finley from UNCW contests Nagsayama tomorrow for seventh.
In doubles action, Nomoto/Nagayama suffered their first lost to ETSU's Antonia Kolovu/McShane as MT dropped a heart breaking 9-8 (3-0) match. The tandem of Nomoto/Nagayama play for third place on Sunday.
Moraes/Constantinide fell to UNCW's Christine Kharkevitch/Alyssa Ritchie, 8-1. The duo plays UNCW for third place tomorrow.
"Today, we learned a lot about where our team is at this point in the season," said head coach Shelley Godwin. "We took some hard losses and have to mature when handling adversity. We will look to bounce back tomorrow and finish the tournament on a strong note."
The Hokie Invite doubles begin at 8am Central on Sunday before concluding with singles matches starting at 10:30am.
