October 2, 2012 · @MTAthletics

MURFREESBORO - Former Middle Tennessee football star Kelly Holcomb will be the newest Blue Raider inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame as announced by the TSHF committee today. Holcomb will be one of 11 inductees at the annual recognition banquet at the Renaissance Hotel in Nashville, Tenn., on May 4. Holcomb becomes the 20th member of the Hall of Fame with a connection to Blue Raider athletics.

Holcomb will join the likes of Frank Wycheck, Trey Teague, Rick Byrd, Leonard Hamilton, Dr. Chris Jones, Larry Sievers, Penny Hardaway, John Ed Miller (lifetime achievement), Bob Bell (posthumously), and Ermal Allen.

Holcomb attended Lincoln County High School where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. After leading Lincoln County to the 1990 state championship, Holcomb signed with Middle Tennessee where he went on to compile a 31-16 record and led the Blue Raiders to an OVC Championship and three NCAA Playoff appearances.

In a run oriented system, Holcomb still managed to put up some impressive numbers for the Blue Raiders. He currently ranks third all-time in passing yards (7,064), third in completions (501), and fourth in touchdown passes (36).

During his freshman season in 1991, Holcomb earned the start at No. 1 Florida State in Doak Campbell Stadium. Against a secondary that included future NFL players Terrell Buckley and Clifton Abraham, Holcomb completed a school-record at the time 13 straight passes and finished the game 20-for-28.

Following a brilliant career at Middle Tennessee under legendary coach Boots Donnelly, Holcomb was picked up as a free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1995. After being released by Tampa Bay, he spent time with the Barcelona Dragons (NFL Europe) before being signed by the Indianapolis Colts in 1996. Holcomb played with the Colts through the 2000 season before joining the Cleveland Browns in 2001. As a member of the Browns, Holcomb had one of the most memorable passing performances in NFL history when he threw for a record 429 yards in a Wild Card game against Pittsburgh in 2003.

Holcomb, a 2008 Blue Raider Hall of Fame inductee, played with the Browns until 2004 before finishing his career with Buffalo (2005-06), Philadelphia (2007), and Minnesota (2007). Holcomb ended his 13-year NFL career with his official retirement announcement on July 7, 2008.

Holcomb, who is in his fifth season as a color analyst on the Blue Raider Network, and his wife Lorie have three children and reside in Murfreesboro.
