MT collects five victories in final day at Roberta Alison Fall Classic
Moraes wins individual singles title with perfect 3-0 weekend
October 6, 2012 · @MTAthleticsTUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Middle Tennessee women's tennis notched five victories as junior Nayara Moraes picked up a tournament title in the final day of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic at the University of Alabama.
Moraes won the pink draw title after outlasting Kentucky's Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff. The sophomore lost her first set, 4-6, but battled to win the last two, 6-4, 3-1 before Kougoucheff retired.
Freshman Irina Constantinide won the gold consolation final after knocking out Auburn's Plamena Kurteva, 6-2,6-2.
In other singles action, Iris Verboven knocked off Yuiri Nomoto, 6-2, 6-3 in the yellow draw, while Georgia State's Chaimaa Roudami secured a 6-2, 7-6 (5-0) win over MT's Flavia Nagayama.
The combination of Lexi Brand and Moraes won a pair of doubles matches on Saturday. The duo outlasted Georgia Tech's Natasha Prokhnevska/Jasmine Minor, 8-6. In the teal consolation finals, Brand/Moraes won 9-3 (8-0) over Ashley Kiten/Maria Cardenas of Auburn.
Nomoto/Constantinide dropped an 8-5 contest to
Georgia State's Maryna Kozachenko/Roudami, 8-5. The tandem rebounded with an 8-3 win over Kentucky's Stephanie Fox and Grace Trimble.
Carla Nava and Flavia Nagayama also played a doubles contest, but fell 8-5 to Vandy's Courtney Colton and Maggie Leavell.
"We did a good job of finishing strong today," said head coach Shelley Godwin. "This weekend's focus was about controlling our effort and attitude and I am proud of the way the girl's represented the program this weekend. We are a better team after these past two weeks and are definitely headed into the right direction."
The Blue Raiders take a week off before competing in the ITA Regional's in West Lafayette, Ind., on Oct. 18-21.
