Men's Tennis adds Pedro Gonzalez for 2013 season
Borendame rounds out roster one week before season begins
January 16, 2013 · Athletic CommunicationsMURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee men's tennis squad added another weapon for the 2013 spring season when Pedro Gonzalez joined the team last week.
Gonzalez is a native of Maracay, Venezuela, and head coach Jimmy Borendame hopes he will compete for significant playing time.
"Pedro is an exciting last minute add for us," Borendame said. "He has been coached by Matt Walker-a former Blue Raider-the past few years. Pedro has a lot of game and has been training on clay for a few years. It will take him some time to get used to playing on hard courts but I anticipate him working his way into the lineup as the season goes on."
He is currently ranked No. 274 by the International Tennis Federation, and has several victories over top-100 and top-50 athletes. In fact, in just over a year and a half of ITF play, he has defeated more than eight top-100 and three top-50 players. Most recently, Gonzalez was a runner-up at the G4 Naples ITF event, held in Naples, Fla., and defeated ITF No. 45 in semifinals of G4 Naples ITF.
"Pedro has a great attitude and is extremely coachable," Borendame said. "He has some impressive wins over top 100 players in the world and I think he will be a tough out in the singles lineup. With this addition of Pedro, this is clearly the deepest team I have ever coached."
