MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee women's tennis head coach Shelley Godwin announced the addition of former tennis pro Julie Ditty as an assistant coach for the Blue Raider program.
Ditty, a Vanderbilt graduate, replaces Gui Jasmin who left the program earlier this year. Prior to joining MT, she spent one year as the Director of Tennis at the Bellefonte Country Club in Ashland, Ky. She then spent two months as a volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater before working seven months as the assistant tennis professional at Ritter Park Tennis Center in Huntington, W.V.
"I am thrilled to have Julie come on board with our program," said Godwin. "The experience and insight she has about the game is going to be invaluable in helping move our program forward. She has made an immediate impact and I look forward to that continuing throughout her time here."
The Ashland, Ky., native competed for 10 years as a professional athlete on the Sony Ericsson Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour. She played in all four grand slam tournaments and ranked as high as 89th in the world. She also reached as high as 65th in doubles competition.
She is the record holder for the most singles and doubles titles on the United State Tennis Association (UTSA) pro circuit with 32 victories. She was also a participant on the 2009 United States' Federation Cup team. Ditty played for three World Team Tennis clubs: the Boston Lobsters, Newport Beach Breakers and the New York Buzz.
Prior to turning professional, Ditty played for the Vanderbilt women's tennis program from 1997 until 2001. While with the Commodores, she was a two time All-SEC player, a three time All-American and the 1999 Tennessee Amateur Female Athlete of the Year.
Ditty was enshrined into the Kentucky Tennis Association Hall of Fame in 2008 and entered the Vanderbilt Athletic Hall of Fame on Sept. 5, 2009. Ditty will be inducted into the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame on April 13, 2013 and will enter the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame on June 13th, 2013.
