NEW ORLEANS - Middle Tennessee's Eluid Rutto was named the Sun Belt Male Track Athlete of the Week for Feb. 4-10, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Rutto, a freshman from Eldoret, Kenya, joined the Blue Raiders in January and has competed in just three meets so far this season. He won the men's 800 meter and 1600 meter runs at the MT Invitational last weekend. Rutto sprinted out the mile in 4:18.63, finishing .02 seconds ahead of Belmont's Kurtis Gibson.
In the 800 meter run, Rutto topped teammate Robinson Simatei by nearly one second, crossing the finish line in 1:55.93. Rutto is now fourth in the Sun Belt in the 800 and ninth in the mile.
This is the fifth Athlete of the Week award for Middle Tennessee, which competes this Saturday, Jan. 9, in the Valentine Invitational at the Murphy Center.
