NASHVILLE - In their final match at Nashboro Village, Middle Tennessee won the doubles point and never looked back, defeating Yale 6-1 on Sunday.
Ben Davis and Victor Cornea paired together at No. 2 doubles for the second match in a row, and cruised by Yale's John Haug and Patrick Chase, 8-4. In No. 1 doubles, Yannick Born and Marlon Brand defeated No. 19 Daniel Hoffman and Marc Powers, 8-6.
"Our doubles are really coming together at this point in the season," head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "I was really impressed with our Flight 1 doubles team (Born and Brand), who knocked off a top 20 doubles team."
The third flight of doubles, Christoph Lang and David Fox squared off with Zachary Dean and Matt Saiontz, but the match was left unfinished.
Lang and Cornea won their singles matches in two sets. Lang topped Hoffman, 6-4, 6-1, while Cornea defeated 7-5, 6-3.
"Christoph wasn't feeling 100 percent this weekend, but he went out there and really fought hard to give us wins," Borendame said.
Yale's lone victory of the day came from Jason Brown, who defeated Born in three sets. Born fell, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6.
No. 101 Davis clinched the match for the Blue Raiders after winning in three sets over Haug. Davis fell in the first set, 2-6, but fought back in the second, 7-6 (8-6). During the third set, a power outage at the facility caused a slight delay, but Davis went on to win the third set, 6-1.
Ettore Zito won his match against Zachary Krumholz, 6-2, 6-1, and David Fox cruised through the Flight 6 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
Middle Tennessee will travel to Evanston, Ill., and Raleigh, N.C., next week as it faces Northwestern and North Carolina State, respectively. MT will return home Feb. 22 as it faces UT-San Antonio at the Bouldin Tennis Center.
