Nava nabs SBC Athlete of the Week honors
Senior is 3-3 in singles action this season
February 13, 2013 · @MTAthleticsNEW ORLEANS - Middle Tennessee's Carla Nava was named the Sun Belt Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The redshirt senior helped the Blue Raiders win a pair of critical points in MT's 4-3 victory over UAB on Sunday. Nava and her partner Yuiri Nomoto secured the doubles point with an 8-5 victory over the Blazers' Menanteau Moolman and Rachel Daniell in the No. 1 position.
With the Raiders holding onto a 3-2 lead, Nava defeated Moolman handily at No. 5, 6-1, 6-1, to secure Middle Tennessee's second match victory this season.
The Mexico City product is 3-3 in singles action this season and has collected two victories in doubles competition. Wednesday's honor is the first for Nava in her four-year career at Middle Tennessee.
"Carla is very deserving of this honor," head coach Shelley Godwin said. "She played a vital role leading our team against UAB on Sunday. She showed a lot of poise and confidence in closing out both doubles and singles to help us get the win."
The Raiders (2-4) open a three-match road swing at Butler on Friday, Feb. 15. MT also visits Miami (Ohio) on Feb. 17 before closing out the trip at in-state foe Austin Peay on Feb. 20.
