BLANCO, Texas - Middle Tennessee women's golf improved in the second week of spring action at the Jim West Challenge in Blanco, Texas.
Middle Tennessee sits in eighth place in the 12-team field at the tournament after the first two rounds on Sunday.
"This is one tough golf course, and there were some things that I liked despite the fact that we are in eighth place. We could be a lot higher in the standings," head coach Chris Adams said.
"Our senior leader shot a 93 in the first round, causing us to have to count freshman Emily Miller's 92, and you can't win tournaments that way."
"We started the day in the dark, and finished in the dark, which made things difficult as well," Adams noted. "And we had someone break a club on the last hole."
Senior Olivia Love and sophomore Allie Knight had the best scores for the Blue Raiders. Both fired totals of 156 for the two rounds, placing them in a tie for 11th overall, while freshman Avery George is tied for 20th.
MT shot an aggregate 326 over the first 18 holes, good for fouth place and only one stroke behind Eastern Michigan in third.
The second round of 18 holes was a dogfight, as the pack tried to gain ground on the two leaders, 39th ranked Texas State and UTEP. Love and George led the way in the first round, each shooting 77. Knight posted an 80, but freshman Emily Miller and senior Ashley Haggard both shot in the low 90's.
In the second round, Love and Knight continued their strong play, Haggard and Miller came out firing in the second round, and the Blue Raiders picked up some steam, at one point moving into third place. But they faltered over the last few holes, and despite improving by nine strokes over their first round score, they finished the day tied for eighth place with a team aggregate of 643.
Middle Tennessee will tee off on Monday at 8:15 in the final round, and Adams hopes for more consistency from top to bottom in her lineup.
