NEW ORLEANS - For the third time in his career and the first time this season, Hunter Adkins earned Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Adkins got the Blue Raiders off on a high note to start the 2013 campaign, tossing a gem to lead Middle Tennessee to a 1-0 win over Ball State on Friday. The Signal Mountain, Tenn., native retired the first seven batters he faced on the mound and allowed just four hits through eight innings of work and struck out seven en route to his first victory of the season.
Adkins allowed Ball State to hit just .160 in the contest, and MT recorded its first opening game shutout since 1978 in Jim McGuire's debut as head coach.
The senior also earned a Pitcher of the Week honor last season, picking it up for his complete-game shutout against Ohio last February.
Adkins and the Blue Raiders close out the four-game home stand to open the season on Tuesday when Austin Peay visits Reese Smith Jr. Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
