Blue Raiders fall to Mississippi Valley, McNeese State

OXFORD, Miss. - The Blue Raider softball team fell in both games on Day 2 of the Red and Blue Classic. Middle Tennessee lost, 11-2, to Mississippi Valley State in five innings on Saturday and 6-3 to McNeese State.
Middle Tennessee drops to 0-9 for the season while the MVSU improves to 2-8. McNeese St. is now 11-6 on the year.
Jordyn Fisherback (0-4) started Game 1 for MT, but threw just one inning, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk. Freshman Ashley Stassin made her third appearance of the season, pitching for 1.2 innings before being pulled. Stassin allowed four runs and walked two.
Shelby Stinnett threw the final 2.1 innings and gave up three runs.
At the plate, MT racked up seven hits, but was unable to capitalize in scoring situations, leaving seven runners on base. Kristi Marquez, Samantha Nieves and Kayla Toney were all 1-for-3 with a double. Marquez is hitting .300 for the season.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the second, LaRi Mitchell worked a walk and moved to second on Nina Davenport's first hit of the season. Niki Campbell then singled through the left side, scoring Mitchell and pushing Davenport to third.
With one out, Katie Brown laid down a bunt, scoring Davenport and putting runners on first and second. Campbell was then thrown at third and Toney grounded out to end the inning.
Stinnett (0-2) started Game 2, and threw 2.2 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits. Caitlin McClure replaced Stinnett in the third and threw the remaining 3.1 innings. McClure allowed just three hits, and struck out one batter.
After falling behind 3-0, the Blue Raiders got on the board in the third with back-to-back home runs.. Marquez sent a two-out, 0-1 pitch over the center field wall for her first ever collegiate home run. Toney then slugged her first homerun of the season into right field.
Down to its last chance in the top of the seventh, MT pushed one run across, but fell short of a comeback. Nina Dever led off the inning with a walk, and later scored on Brown's one-out double. Brown, though, was thrown out trying to reach third base on the play. Campbell struck out to end the game.
MT will close out the Red and Blue Classic in a 1:30 p.m. CT matchup with Ole Miss.
