Dudley, Women's DMR grab titles on Day 1 of SBC Championships

Women's squad in second, men seventh

JONESBORO, Ark. - Middle Tennessee's Ann Dudley set a new meet record in the women's high jump, and the women's 4000 meter distance medley relay team grabbed a title on Day 1 of the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Dudley won her third consecutive SBC women's high jump title, hitting a mark of five feet, 11.5 inches, out-jumping her nearest opponent by .05 meters.

In the final event of the first day, MT's DMR squad of Stephanie Smith, Amber Jackson, Rachel Islam and Autumn Gipson cruised through the course in 12:06.10, setting a facility record and outdistancing the competition by over three seconds.

Cordairo Golden, who is a front runner for the men's triple jump title, took second in the men's long jump (7.22 meters) and 10th in the high jump (1.95 meters).

The Blue Raiders competed well in both 3000 meter races, as Lucy Kapkiai took third in the women's with a time of 9:56.83, and Julia Kitevski (10:29.33) was 11th. On the men's side, Shadrack Matelong was fifth, crossing the finish in 8:32.45, while Silas Taiget (8:36.78) took eighth.

Several MT runners qualified for Day 2 after preliminary races on Day 1. Asa Bowman (1:57.58) and Eluid Rutto (1:56.82) qualified in the men's 800, while Autumn Gipson (2:17.02) and Rachel Islam (2:15.87) qualified on the women's side.

Only one Blue Raider reached the finals in the 400 meter dash, as Emmanuel Tugumisirize tied for fifth in qualifying with a time of 48.668q.

Noah Akwu (6.555) was seventh in the men's 55 meter prelims, and all four MT competitors qualified in the women's 55 meter hurdle prelims. Rosina Amenebede (7.92), India Hammond (8.02), Christal Wilson (8.04) and Dudley (8.05) were second, fourth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

In the 200 meter dashes, final qualifiers were Awku (21.56) in third on the men's side, and Christal Wilson (24.87) in eighth on the women's side.
