CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Middle Tennessee's men's tennis squad was tripped up in the Championship round of the HEB Classic, as it lost, 4-3, to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
TAMU-CC (4-5) hosted the event, and pulled an upset in each round to grab the title. The No. 34 Blue Raiders drop to 10-5 on the season.
The road to the title match for MT featured a 4-1 win over DePaul and a 4-2 win against UTSA, while the Islanders knocked off No. 30 BYU, 4-1, and Louisiana, 4-2.
"Tough loss today," head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "However, as always, we will bounce back and use this loss to improve."
The final doubles win went to Christoph Lang and David Fox, as they defeated Matt Westmoreland and Andrew Maingot, 8-4, in the third flight to clinch the point.
From there, however, the battle began, as the Blue Raiders split with the Islanders on the first four singles match. They would eventually lose four of the six.
Yannick Born fell to Ricardo Mayagoitia, 1-6, 0-6, in Flight 4 singles, while TAMU-CC picked up its second point the third flight, as Weidinger topped Cornea, 6-4, 6-2.
Down 2-1, Blue Raiders bounced back by winning the second and sixth flights. Lang grabbed a two-set, 6-2, 6-2, victory over Westmoreland.
Fox grabbed MT's final point, as he won his Flight 6 singles match with Pietro Jordao, 6-3, 6-4.
Davis (No. 92 ITA) had won five of his last six singles decisions, but struggled against the Islanders' Nagy, and fell, 2-6, 5-7.
With the teams tied at 3-3, Ettore Zito fell in his first set against Javier Pujol, 2-6, but bounced back in the second to win, 6-2. Down to the set and match point, Zito faltered in the third set, losing 4-6.
The Blue Raiders will host their first outdoor match of the season next week, as they take on Morehead State on March 6 at 1:30 p.m. at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center.
"We now have enough outdoor matches under our belt and plan on taking care of business next Wednesday versus Morehead State," Borendame said.
