Makabu wins triple jump on Day 1 of Black and Gold meet

NASHVILLE - Day 1 of the Black and Gold Meet, hosted by Vanderbilt University, is complete, with France Makabu grabbing Middle Tennessee's lone title, though several Blue Raider athletes finished in the top 10 of their events.
Makabu hit a mark of 12.21 meters (40-0.75 feet) in her first outdoor track meet of the season, besting Southern Illinois' Kenya Culmer by .13 meters to win the event.
India Hammond and Pershawna Williams also competed in the women's triple jump, earning fifth and sixth place honors with jumps of 11.88 and 11.28 meters, respectively.
On the men's side, Kameron Rory (13.87 meters) was the other top 5 MT finisher on the day, and Nigel Jones (13.02 meters) placed eighth.
The men's 1,500 and 3,000 meter invitational races hosted the final three Blue Raider competitors.
Eliud Rutto (3:57.05) and Shadrack Matelong (4:01.01) were eighth and 10th in the 1,500 meters, while Daniel Ketter finished the 3,000 meter race in 8:46.16 to finish 12th.
