Men's Tennis advances to finals of MT Shootout

Will face either Georgia State or Elon on Sunday

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - No. 1 seeded Middle Tennessee picked two 4-0 victories in the first two rounds of the MT Shootout at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center on Saturday, clinching a spot in the finals tomorrow.

MT topped No. 8 seeded DePaul in the first match off the day, and defeated Sun Belt Conference foe South Alabama in the semifinals.

Victor Cornea picked up the Blue Raiders first victory of the day, setting the tone for MT's round one rout. Cornea defeated DePaul's 6-0, 6-1.

From there, Christoph Lang picked up a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Mathias Hamback, and Ben Davis defeated Filip Dzanko, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 1 singles.

David Fox clinched the match for MT with a 7-5, 6-1 topping of Paul John.

Yannick Born and Ettore Zito's matches were left unfinished.

In the second match, Lang defeated USA's Gerhar Gruindelingh, 6-2, 6-2 in Flight 2 singles to start the dual.

Next, Cornea and Davis picked up their second victories of the day to put the Blue Raiders in the lead, 3-0.  Cornea was victorious over Shayann Vaezzadeh, 6-0, 6-3, and Davis won his Flight 1 singles battle with Daniel Leitner, 6-4, 6-4.

Zito won his first match of the tournament, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, over Cody Hall to finish the team dual.

MT (13-6) will play the winner of No. 2  Elon and No. 3 Georgia State at Noon on Sunday at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center. Live stats for that match are available here.
