BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A come-from-behind victory propelled Middle Tennessee women's tennis to a 4-3 victory over ULM on Saturday at the Samford Tennis Complex.
Middle Tennessee (8-8) dropped both doubles points before bouncing back with four out of six victories in singles action to collect their second win over a Sun Belt opponent this season.
In doubles action, the ULM (10-3) tandem of Justyna Krol/Medy Blankvoort downed Irina Constantinide/Flavia Nagayama, 8-4, at the No. 2 spot. The Warhawks clinched the doubles point when Sophie Rufyikiri and Iris Van Leeuwen won 8-4 over MT's Yuiri Nomoto and Alexandra Torres. The No. 1 tandem of Carla Nava and Nayara Moraes' match with ULM's Petra Horakova and Silvia Tumova was halted due to the previous two outcomes.
ULM moved to a two point edge when Blankvoort picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Nomoto at the No. 2 position. The senior Nava gave the Raiders the first win of the day with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Horakova. However, that point was short lived when the Warhawks' Van Leeuwen won the third point (6-3, 6-3) over the freshman Torres.
Facing a 3-1 disadvantage, MT bounced back with three consecutive wins to clinch the match. Moraes posted a 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) win over Krol at the No. 4 spot. The senior Nagayama won her 12th match this season with a 7-5, 6-4 defeat of Tumova. In the No. 1 position, true freshman Irina Constantinide knocked off ULM's Rufyikiri, 7-5, 6-4, to win the match for the Blue Raiders.
"This is a big win for our team," noted head coach Shelley Godwin. "We came out a bit flat in doubles, but came out ready to work on every court in singles. I am proud of the fight and resiliency the girls showed today."
Middle Tennessee returns home for its final three matches in Murfreesboro. On Friday, April 4, the Blue Raiders host Tulane and then take on Sun Belt foe Arkansas State for Senior Day on Sunday, April 7. MT closes out the home portion of the schedule against Samford on April 10.
