MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's Track and Field squads head for Auburn, Ala., this weekend for the Tiger Track Classic, April 5-6.
The teams are coming off impressive performances at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta last weekend, where several personal and one school record fell. Eliud Rutto broke Festus Chemaoi's previous mark in the men's 800 meter run with a time of 1:49.13.
"We're hoping for good weather this weekend," head coach Dean Hayes said. "That will give us a chance to compete in a variety of events, mix up the different lineups and try to get us ready for the Sun Belt Championships."
This week's meet will begin Friday at 3 p.m. CT, but MT will not compete until 4 p.m. in the men's and women's triple jump.
On Saturday, competition heats up at 11 a.m. with the women's 4 x 100 meter relay, and the men's and women's long jump events.
"There is definitely some good competition at the event this year, especially with Auburn, Clemson, Purdue, Louisville and Wake Forest," Hayes said.
With a relatively young program, Hayes is looking for the team to continue to learn and gain experience.
"We have a lot of newcomers, so it's big to get them some experience in U.S. Track, because most of them are foreign," Hayes said. "We'll look to get them ready for the Sun Belt and hopefully the NCAA Regionals in Greensboro, N.C."
