Gritty effort propels MT past Samford in 4-3 victory
Raiders close out home slate with win streakApril 10, 2013 · @MTAthletics
MURFREESBORO - The home season finale was a dandy for the Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team. The Blue Raiders battled from behind twice in four three-set singles contests to pick up a critical 4-3 victory over Samford at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Complex.
Wednesday's match saw four of the six singles matches go to three sets. MT (10-9) opened up to a 2-1 match lead before Samford (8-13) reeled off three-straight wins to take a 3-2 edge. Victories from seniors Carla Nava and Yuiri Nomoto sealed the match point for the Blue Raiders. The victory marked the second consecutive win for MT as the Raiders closed out the home schedule for the 2013 season.
The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point with a pair of 8-4 victories. Nava and Alexandra Torres cut their three point deficit to 5-4 until Carita Moolman and Adri Lochner reeled off three sets to win.
The doubles point was claimed by Samford when Kristin Lewis/Emily Mallory won 8-4 over the tandem of Irina Constantinide and Nayara Moraes. Middle Tennessee did salvage a doubles result as the duo of Nomoto and Flavia Nagayama edged Stephanie N'tcha and Jessica Northcutt.
Nagayama picked up her team-best 14th singles victory with a 6-2, 6-2 straight set win over Northcutt. The Raiders went ahead when Constantinide battled Lewis in a three-set frame and came out victorious, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
In the fourth position, Moraes won easily over Moorman in the first set 6-1. However, a fall hampered the sophomore's play down the stretch as Samford came from behind to win 6-3, 6-2 and tie the match at 2-2.
The MT freshman Torres fought valiantly in her match, but fell short 6-3, 7-6 (2) to AnnMarie Lyon as the Bulldogs regained a 3-2 lead. That edge was short-lived when the senior Nomoto earned a three-set victory at the No. 2 position. She won the first contest 7-6 (5), before falling 2-6 to N'tcha. The Tokyo product fought back with a 6-2 win and secured the valuable third point.
In the final three set thriller, Nava fell 5-7 in her opening set. She rebounded with a 6-3 and 6-2 victory to seal the win.
The Raiders close out the regular season on the road this Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14, with matches versus Troy and North Texas in Denton, Texas.
