MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee dropped both games of its conference doubleheader with North Texas, 3-2 in Game 1 and 8-1 in Game 2 on Saturday afternoon.
MT drops to 5-41 (1-17 SBC) on the season while North Texas jumped over .500, standing at 21-20 (8-9 SBC).
Shelby Stinnett (0-9) threw four shutout innings, but struggled in the fifth, allowing three runs (two earned). She scattered 11 hits in the game before Caitlin McClure replaced her with two outs in the fifth. McClure threw the final 1.1, walking one batter and not allowing a hit.
Nina Davenport continued her hot hitting of late, going 2-for-3 in the game with a run to lead the Blue Raiders. Niki Campbell finished 1-for-3 while Kayla Toney was 1-for-2 with her seventh double of the season.
MT grabbed an early 2-0 lead, scoring both in the bottom of the second. Campbell and Davenport started the inning with two straight singles before Taylor Lee entered the game as a pinch runner for Campbell. From there, both runners moved into scoring position on Samantha Nieves' sacrifice bunt. With two outs in the inning, Lee scored on a passed ball during Laura Dukes' at-bat, and Davenport was awarded home when NT's Jordan Terry collided with her on the third base line.
NT, however, would rally in the sixth to take the lead and the game.
In Game 2, Jordyn Fisherback dropped to 3-17 on the season, throwing just 2.2 innings and giving up three runs on four hits. She did, however, strike out four Mean Green batters.
Ashley Stassin entered the game in the third and threw into the fifth before McClure entered to throw the final 2.2 innings.
Down 8-0, MT scored one run in the sixth to extend the game, but couldn't overcome the deficit.
Nieves singled to lead off the sixth, and moved to second on a throwing error by Danielle Hoff when Toney reached on a fielder's choice. On a double steal, Nieves was thrown out at third while Toney took second, prior to Toney reaching third when Dukes hit into a fielder's choice. Toney then scored on Dever's sacrifice fly to center field.
The teams will close out the series with a single-game on Sunday, beginning at Noon. The day will begin with a senior day celebration for Kristi Marquez and Nina Davenport approximately 15 minutes before the game.
