Dudley, Makabu win titles at Penn Relays
4x200, 4x400 men's relay teams qualify for finalsApril 26, 2013 · @MTAthletics
PHILADELPHIA - Middle Tennessee had both relay squads qualify for their championship races tomorrow and grabbed two individual first-place finishes on Friday at the Penn Relays.
The first Blue Raider competitors on the day were the men's 4x200 meter team, comprised of Emmanuel Tugumisirize, Andre Hamilton, Tahir Walsh and Noah Akwu. The team crossed the finish line in 1:23.81 - just two seconds off the school record - to qualify fourth in tomorrow's final, scheduled for 1:45 p.m.
In the women's College Triple Jump event, France Makabu took first with a jump of 12.56 meters, more than two inches longer than her nearest competitor, Julie Koloski of Pittsburgh. Had Makabu competed in the Championship triple jump event, her jump would have earned her fifth place.
Ann Dudley defended her high jump crown at the Penn Relays, winning this year's competition with a height of 1.84 meters, tying her personal best that she set at the 2012 Penn Relays. Dudley's jump of six feet, one-half inch is the fourth highest jump of any NCAA female competitor this season.
"Ann is the first two-time individual champion we've ever had at these relays," head coach Dean Hayes said. "We had Roland McGhee win an individual title and two relay titles, but Ann is the first to have two individual titles"
Closing out the day for MT was the men's 4x400 meter relay squad, made up of Tugumisirize, Hamilton, Eliud Rutto and Awku. The squad took fourth in the prelims, finishing in 3:07.12. The men will compete in the championship race tomorrow at 5 p.m.
"When you are in these types of meets, it's about seeing who's mentally tough enough to get the job done," Hayes said. "Overall, we did that and I'm really proud of them."
Along with the two relay squads, Cordairo Golden will compete for MT in the men's Triple Jump Championship event tomorrow, starting at 1 p.m. To follow along with the Penn Relays, please visit pennrelaysonline.com, or click here.
