Six titles highlight final day of regular season for track and field

Will compete in Sun Belt Championships, May 10-12

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - On the final day of Middle Tennessee's outdoor track and field regular season, Middle Tennessee had two Top 5 finishes at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Penn., and won six titles at the Coach "O" Invitational in Troy, Ala., on Saturday.

At the Penn Relays, Cordairo Golden was fourth in the men's triple jump championships, hitting a mark of 15.58 meters. Just after Golden's finish, the Blue Raiders' 4x200 "A" team was third in the "men's 4x200 meter relay Championship of America" event. The squad of Emmanuel Tugumisirize, Andre Hamilton, Tahir Walsh and Noah Akwu improved on yesterday's qualifying time to cross the line in 1:23.38.

The team of Tugumisirize, Hamilton, Eliud Rutto and Akwu also took sixth in the "Men's 4x400 meter relay Championship of America," finishing in 3:07.60.

Autumn Gipson won the first of two 3,000 meter steeplechase championships at the Coach "O" Invitational. Gipson ran a personal best time of 10:59.10 to finish more than 30 seconds ahead of the second-place competitor. Robinson Simatei followed up Gipson's performance with an impressive time of 8:34.96 in the men's race.

The Blue Raiders also had championships in the men's and women's 1,500 meter runs, starting with Lucy Kapkiai's time of 4:45.92 in the women's race. Silas Taiget was first on the men's side, finishing in 3:58.63.

After not competing in last week's Vanderbilt Invitational, Amber Jackson jumped back into competition with a time of 2:11.88 in the women's 800 meter run.

Jasmine Abrams won MT's final title of the day as she hit a personal best mark of 24.77 seconds in the 200 meter dash.

The Blue Raiders will take next weekend off before competing in the Sun Belt Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 10-12 in Miami, Fla.
