MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee split its doubleheader with Belmont on Thursday, winning Game 1, 3-2 before falling in the second, 3-1 at the home finale.
MT improved to 7-45 on the season while Belmont now sits at 14-37.
Game 1's starter Kailey McDougald dazzled in her 5.1 innings in the circle, scattering six hits and striking out four before she left in the sixth. Caitlin McClure (3-12) picked up the win after throwing the final 1.2 innings and giving up just three hits.
At the plate, Samantha Nieves and Lindsey Fenner were each 2-for3, while Kayla Toney went 2-for-2 to lead the team. Nina Dever's two-run home run was her only hit of the game, but she provided MT with the lead until the fifth.
Nieves led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle and took second on Toney's sacrifice bunt. With one out in the inning, Dever hammered a pitch over the left field wall to put the Blue Raiders up, 2-0.
After the first, McDougald didn't allow a Belmont base runner past first base until the sixth, when the Bruins tied the score at two with five hits in the inning.
MT was stranded with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, but came up with late inning heroics for the second game in a row. Nieves singled to lead off the inning, and took second on another Toney sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Katie Brown reached on an error by Courtney Elrod, allowing Nieves to come home with the winning run.
Shelby Stinnett threw a complete game in Game 2, giving up just three runs on six hits, though she would take the loss and drop to 1-13 on the season.
Brown and Nina Davenport were 2-for-3 in the contest, as Brown picked up an RBI.
In the bottom of the first, Toney reached on an error Ashley Hammer with one out, and moved to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. Brown then beat out an infield single, allowing Toney to score and give the Blue Raiders a lead.
Belmont, though, would score three unanswered runs to take the lead, and the game.
MT will close out the season with a doubleheader against WKU in Bowling Green, Ky., on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
