BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Middle Tennessee dropped the final doubleheader of its 2013 season, losing Game 1, 7-1, and falling in the second contest, 4-0,to WKU on Friday at the WKU Softball Complex.
Shelby Stinnett fell to 1-14 on the season after being held accountable for five runs on eight hits, while walking three and striking out one WKU batter in five innings. She threw into the sixth before Jordyn Fisherback replaced her with no outs. Fisherback was liable for two runs and four hits in the game.
Samantha Nieves and Kayla Toney were productive from the Nos. 1 and 2 spots in the lineup, as Nieves was 2-for-3 with a walk, and Toney finished 2-for-4. Katie Brown and Niki Cambpell had MT's other hits in the game.
Over three of the first four innings, MT had the first batter reach base safely, but the Blue Raiders stranded six in that span.
After 2.5 scoreless innings, WKU took a 3-0 lead on four hits, though a play at the plate limited any further damage.
In the fourth, MT finally broke through on the board, scoring one run, but again stranding two runners. Brown led off the inning with a single before taking second Chelsea Good's sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Campbell poked a 1-2 pitch into right center for RBI No. 7 on the season, driving Brown home.
The floodgates would open in the sixth, however, as WKU tacked racked up six singles, including four straight to push four more runs across as the Blue Raiders fell behind, 7-1.
Kailey McDougald (0-2) started the second contest of the evening and didn't allow a base runner until there were two outs in the third. After two straight singles, however, she was replaced by Caitlin McClure. McDougald was charged with one run in the game.
McClure threw into the sixth, allowing just one hit on the day and holding WKU scoreless over her 2.20 innings pitched. She was, however, liable for two of the three Hilltopper runs in the sixth.
Six Blue Raiders had hits in the game, but five runners were left stranded, limiting any MT threats that developed.
Ashley Stassin finished the game for MT but allowed Katrina Metoyer's three-run home run.
Down to their last chance, the Blue Raiders would start the seventh with two straight singles, but were unable to capitalize, stranding two in the final frame.
The Blue Raiders finish their season at 7-47 (1-21 Sun Belt Conference), ending their 12-year run in the conference with an overall record of 105-174. They will begin play in Conference USA next season.
