Rutto qualifies for 800-meter finals
Tugumirize finishes individual season in 400-meter semifinalsJune 5, 2013 · @MTAthletics
EUGENE, Ore. - On Day 1 of the NCAA Championships, Middle Tennessee's Eliud Rutto qualified for the 800-meter finals, while Emmanuel Tugumisirize closed out an impressive individual season in the 400-meter semifinals, failing to qualify for Friday's finals.
Rutto's time of 1:48.91 was the fifth fastest in the 800-meter semifinals, and because he took second in the second heat, qualified fifth for Friday's finals. Rutto was one of two freshman to qualify, joining Penn State's Brandon Kidder.
The 800 finals will take place on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Tugumisirize did not qualify for the 400-meter finals, despite running his second fastest time of the year, crossing the finish line in 45.90 seconds. He was fifth in his third qualifying heat. Overall, four qualifying runners ran times faster than the MT's school record time of 45.35 seconds.
Both runners have been listed as possible participants on MT's 4x400-meter relay team, though Rutto will likely be scratched from the lineup in order to prepare for the finals. Tugumisirize will likely anchor the mile relay team.
Tomorrow's competition will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the hammer throw, with the Blue Raiders' competing in the relay at 6:40 p.m. Follow along with the entire NCAA Championships, here.
