MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - A week after closing out the 2013 spring season with a No. 48 ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the Blue Raider men's tennis team solidified an appearance in next year's ITA Kickoff Weekend Event.
Middle Tennessee will travel to Columbus, Ohio, Jan. 24-27, 2014, to compete in the Ohio State division, where the team will face Louisville in the first round.
"The Ohio State location will be extremely tough for us, starting with a very strong Louisville team that, like us, returns all six starters from last year's roster," head coach Jimmy Borendame said.
MT competed in the 2013 Kickoff Weekend, going 1-1 in the Duke regional with a win over ACC-foe Virginia Tech.
In addition, the final regional and ITA singles and doubles rankings were released this week, and MT had athletes on nearly every list. The team is ranked No. 6 in the Ohio Valley Region, and Ben Davis (No. 13) and David Fox (No. 19) made the singles nomination. For doubles, the pair of Davis and Victor Cornea is ranked No. 8 in the Ohio Valley.
Davis and Cornea were also ranked in the final ITA doubles standings, being named the 57th best doubles pairing in the nation.
"I think the rankings are a good indicator of the strength of this program," Borendame said. "To have a team that was that young last year - returning all six starters to next year's roster - and to have a few names in the rankings, is a pretty exciting thing for Middle Tennessee."
