MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Former Blue Raider Hunter Adkins has reached an agreement with Major League Baseball's Oakland Athletics. Adkins is expected to sign a free agent contract with the A's early next week and will immediately join the organization's rookie affiliate, the AZL Athletics of the Arizona League.

Last year, Adkins was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 575th pick in the 18th round, but elected to return to Middle Tennessee for his senior season. It paid off, as the Signal Mountain, Tenn., enjoyed the best year of his career in 2013 with a 4.31 ERA and 65 strikeouts.

The righthander began his final collegiate campaign with two of the best performances of his career. Adkins earned Sun Belt Player of the Week honors after opening the season with eight innings of shutout ball against Ball State, then followed that up with an eight-inning, one-run performance against Auburn. He picked up the victory in his first three outings of the year and went at least seven innings on each occasion.

Adkins is the second Blue Raider to sign with a MLB organization this year, joining fellow righthander Daniel Palo. Palo was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 27th round on June 8 and is currently playing for the rookie affiliate, the Grand Junction Rockies of the Pioneer League.
